How do I react quicker? Improve agility? Ever think these things? Of course you do! Then it is time to get to work on your balance! Yes, well to be more specific: athletic balance. The foundation of having quicker reaction time is having optimal proprioception (Athletic Balance). Proprioception is the body's ability to automatically (subconsciously) find it's center of balance. Core strength also is the major building block that, combined with proprioception, heightens one's athletic balance. To feel your proprioception working simply stand on one foot (barefoot is better) and feel what your muscles around your angle are doing. They are firing and relaxing to maintain your balance, but you are not consciously thinking about it! Now that you have wrapped your head around this basic foundation of basic balance, now it is time to test your athletic balance. Hop on one leg (with each leg) in each of these directions: straight up, forward & to the opposite direction of the foot you are standing on landing in a single leg squat position. If any part of your body moves, especially from your hips up, you do not have optimal athletic balance, which leads to non-optimal reaction time during game time. How do you improve your foundation for reaction time?
